Synopsis

Mount Sinai Hospital Centre Montreal is a clinical research leader in the areas of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and sleep apnea. The research team meets weekly to discuss recent progress on current clinical research projects. The numerous reports published by our group in peer-reviewed medical journals and periodicals over several years have made significant contributions to advances in cutting-edge fields of respiratory and sleep medicine.

On-going research projects cover a wide range of topics, including:

  • Pathogenesis and management of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).
  • Pulmonary Rehabilitation in chronic respiratory disease.
  • Nocturnal oxygen desaturation in COPD: the effect on fatigue, sleepiness, anxiety, quality of life, cognitive functions and systemic inflammatory profiles.
  • Nocturnal oxygen therapy in COPD, as part of the International Nocturnal OXygen (INOX) Trial, in collaboration with the Institut Universitaire de Cardiologie et de Pneumologie de Québec – Université Laval.
  • Demographic and disease severity trends in COPD.
  • Diagnosis and treatment of sleep-disordered breathing and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
  • Research Ethics: how to improve informed consent of research participants, in collaboration with St. Mary’s Hospital, Montreal.

Members of our research group regularly participate in local, national and international scientific meetings where on-going research outcomes are presented as posters, multimedia presentations and published abstracts. Annual venues include the American Thoracic Society (ATS) International Conference, the CHEST meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians – ACCP, the Canadian Respiratory Conference – CRC of the Canadian Thoracic Society – CTS, and the SLEEP meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies – APSS and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society. Manuscripts summarizing the results emerging form our projects are usually published in peer-reviewed medical periodicals.
